Fair Trade – it’s more than just marketing

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

We spend a lot of time at Doma thinking about fair trade and what it really means.  For many people fair trade is simply a buzz word mentioned to increase sales.  We frequently see roasters in our area (we’re not mentioning any names) claiming to pay higher than fair trade prices to the farmers.  This would be great if it were true, but many times it isn’t.  Usually they mean that they pay their broker a price that is higher that the fair trade minimum.  It doesn’t mean that the farmer received this amount.

We really encourage people to ask questions of their roaster.  Where are they really getting their coffee?  From a broker?  Can they show you what they paid the farmers?  Are they buying from democratically controlled Cooperatives or from brokers and giant factory farms?

You can view all of our contracts and see what we actually paid the farmers at www.fairtradeproof.org.

Ask us about our coffee, we have real answers to all of your questions.

Magic Lantern Theatre

Great movies all the time. Go support these guys and stop going to those big box places. Really. Joe has a great line up week after week. You can check them out at www.magiclanternspokane.com.

Hello everyone -

I have some great news everyone.  I’ve been able to talk Chris Kopczynski, world famous climber and Spokane native, into giving a slideshow and discussion about his memories and adventures on the Eiger Mountain during his 1974ascent.

This is a one-time event that should be amazing.  As he told me earlier today, he’s not pulled out these slides in over30 years.

His talk will be on Thursday April 29th at 8:40pm, the last day/show of The North Face here at the Magic Lantern. Tickets are $7.00 (regular show prices) and can be purchased in advance any day this week by calling or stopping bythe Magic Lantern after 6:30pm.

Seating is limited to the first 105 persons.

While I’m on the subject of Thursday night festivities, Runaways will be completing it’s run this Thursday as well.

Each night (starting tonight) I’ll be giving away a movie poster for the Runaways (raffle style) so come out see a great film and come home (potentially) with free stuff.  Showtimes are 7:00pm each night this week.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opened this last Friday… thanks to everyone who came and sold out the theatre for all three days.

While not having seen it myself I can only tell you what the audience opinion has been.  Everyone across the board hasLOVED the film.  Movies 101 should be reviewing it soon (if not already) and can give you a bit more flavor regarding plot.  You can also go to our website and click on the poster for a view of the films trailer.  We’ll have the film for at least another 2 weeks, but that being said don’t wait to see what might be the sleeper hit of 2010.

Coming this Friday will be ’The Yellow Handkerchief’, and ’Mother’.

Mother is directed by oh so talented Bong Joon-ho of ”The Host” fame, and the film is a NY Times Critic’s Pick.  The NYT review (site listed below) says it all.

Yellow Handkerchief is a film starring the ever durable William Hurt, as well as Kristen Stewart (also in the Runaways asJoan Jett), and seems to be a study of each of the characters in the setting of rural Louisiana.  It’s a 3 1/2 star out of 5and should prove to be a good way to pass the time while we wait for summer to start and Transformers 3 to hit the bigscreen.

Oh, and these likely won’t stay long so come out and sooner rather then later.

(info on Yellow Handkerchief) http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/02/26/movies/26yellow.html

(info on Mother)  http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/movies/12mother.html?scp=8&sq=mother&st=cse

Don’t forget to spread the word on Thursdays North Face special presenter!  For any fan of climbing it’s a must see movie – for any fan of climbers (or just good climbing stories) Kopczynski’s talk is a once in a life time experience.

Thanks.

Joe

No Impact Man

Monday, April 26th, 2010

One thing I think and talk a lot about and mention in my book No Impact Man is that we are wrecking our planet for lives we don’t even necessarily enjoy. As I say in the book:

What  really filled me with despair, though, was that I didn’t believe that the way of life that was steadily wrecking the planet even made us happy. It would be one thing if we woke up the morning after a big blowout party, saw that we’d trashed our home, but  could at least say we had had a rip-roaring good time. But if I had to generalize, I would say that, on average, the 6.5 billion  people who share this globe are nowhere near as happy as they  could be.

Leaving aside the  people who have severely limited access to food and clean drinking water, so many  people I knew, both in New York and elsewhere in the world’s go-fast consumer culture, were dissatisfied with the lives they had worked to get—the lives they were supposed to want.

Many of us work so hard that we don’t get to spend enough time with the  people we love, and so we feel isolated. We don’t  really believe in our work, and so we feel prostituted. The boss has no need of our most creative talents, and so we feel unfulfilled. We have too little connection with something bigger, and so we have no sense of meaning.

Anyway, I spoke to a group of parents at an independent school the other night, and a fourteen-year-old who happened to be there came up to me afterward.

She said, I really want to thank your for saying about people not getting to spend enough time with the people they love.

I said, I really didn’t expect someone your age to understand that part of my talk because you haven’t joined the work force yet.

She said, no, I do get it. She said, we have so much homework and then the school expects us to do so much extracurricular activity that I never get to see my parents.

That was when I saw that she had tears in her eyes.

Did I mention she was fourteen?

What are we coming to?

Skiing Magazine

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

As a kid growing up I was obsessed with skiing and scoured the  magazines for the latest information on World Cup ski racing. My friends and I would read all about the latest races and racers (Gustavo Thoni, Piero Gros) and then go and try and copy that crazy style  on the hill. Seriously, what was that jet turn all about? When I was a bit older I figured one day my name would be in Skiing magazine along side Steve and Phil (and their personal bag carrier, Terry).

Well, a whole bunch of years later, I almost got mentioned in Skiing magazine. Doma Coffee got a great shout out from Mark Lesh. Check it out.

Dek:
The coffee machine in the office is broken today and I’m jonesing for a cup. So let’s talk coffee. DOMA coffee is good—both in taste and practice. There I feel better already…

Based just east of Spokane, Washington in Post Falls, Idaho, DOMA Coffee Roasting Company does it right, offering the finest fair trade, certified organic, direct relationship coffees. They buy their beans directly from farmers that they have a personal relationship with. The result is that they pay higher than fair trade prices for their crops actually treating their farmers well to insure a continued relationship and support. DOMA roasts their coffee using an eco-friendly roaster that uses 80% less natural gas helping to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 39,000 pounds per year. This is the same amount of CO2 that would be released from burning 2000 gallons of gas. They use biodegradable bags that are hand letterpressed with soy-based ink, use 100% toxin free cleaning products, and many more low-impact business practices. And what’s extra great is that these guys are skiers. 16-ounce bags run from $13-16. Order online at domacoffee.com and brew up something good before your next ski trip.

Thanks Mark. I’m just wondering if next time you might take a picture of me with my skis?

Earth Day Spokane

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Well, we survived Earth Day 2010 Spokane style. Weather was excellent and a good vibe all around. Music, belly-dancing, good food and raptors.Thats what I’m talking about and I’ve got photo’s to prove it.

Table, full of DTE coffee and Doma propaganda.

Keaton, rockin’ the suburbs.

Mr. Chris Dreyer, working the crowd.

I’m not sure what is going on here, but it can’t be good.

Marco, signing the petition for NORML.

Everyone loves a parade. Paul, from Down to Earth snuck out of the booth for a few minutes to catch some live action on film. Rebecca caught Paul on camera.

Washington State U. raptor program. This was awesome to see and it’s a great thing that they do-which is rescue wounded raptors. No, not dinosaurs, birds.

All in all, a great day. Don’t forget to make everyday Earth Day.

Earth Day is everyday

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Earth Day is everyday, but lets all get out, ride or walk if we can and celebrate our local Earth Day Celebrations today. There is always great information to be found and used. Really, it’s the least you can do for your Mother. DOMA will be hangin’ out in the DTE booth in Spokane today, drop by and say hi.

Montana is AWESOME

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Missoula rocks. In no particular order, here are some reasons why.

1. Le Petit Outre

2. Leif, Selden and Matt. As always, thanks a lot. We appreciate it.

3. The Good Food Store. Yes please. Rebecca, Dominic, Marco and I did a coffee tasting there. Could people be friendlier? I doubt it. The store is just incredible in every department.

4. KETTLEHOUSE BREWING. Pass me the Bongwater with The Chronic. Thank you. Why can’t we have a brewery like this?

5. Biga Pizza. SBJ.

Ben and Julie. You know who you are and now we know where you live. Thank you.

I’ve included some photo’s of the trip.

Mission Mountains.

Dairy cow. Pregnant.

Because gears are cool.

This guy is lost. Our cool display at The Good Food Store. And those oranges were incredible.
