No Impact Man

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I wish I had written this, but I didn’t. All credit goes to Colin Beavan aka No Impact Man. You can check his site out at http://noimpactman.typepad.com/.

1. Happier planet = happier people.

2. You make a difference.

3. Our culture is broken.

4. The personal is political.

5. Economic growth ? Life satisfaction growth.

6. Jobs are paramount but we should work to make our planetary home better not worse.

7. The concept of zero sum game is for people with zero sum brains.

8. There is a better, happier system out there.

9. If thine eyes (or thine economic system) offends thee, pluck them (or it) out.

10. It’s not about having less. It’s about having more. The question is: more of what?

11. There is dis-ease in our culture. People yearn for something better.

12. People are trustworthy and altruistic and good and will do the right thing if you let them.

13. This does not deny the fact that normal people act abnormally in abnormal situations.

14. Love and good company, the chance to be of service and to matter, connection to something bigger, the use of our most prized talents—these things make most people happier than stuff.

15. Being responsible for the world is not a burden. It is freedom from victimhood!

16. My happiness cannot be complete unless you are happy, too.

DOMA shirts by Slow Loris

Monday, March 29th, 2010

You have probably seen the awesome new DOMA Coffee t-shirts.  Here’s a little information on the people who made them for us…

Slow Loris came to life in Oakland California in the spring of 1997.  Inside a very small storage room (located in the back of a parking garage) of an old cannery building, the very first shirts were printed.  After graduating from CCA(C) in 1998, Slow Loris founder Jessica Lynch left Oakland and returned home to Washington state. Re-locating to Guemes island,  Slow Loris continued to thrive,  screen printing drawings onto shirts, paper and clothing for people around the world, and for touring bands like “Tv on the Radio” and ” my Brightest Diamond”.  While keeping true to the hand made quality (no computers are ever used for design making) Jessica had her “hands” full and in 2007  teamed up with good friend Arlo Rumpff.   Arlo had been a fisherman in the Bering sea, and brought his hard working  enthusiasm to Slow Loris just in time.  He learned how to screen print, (he’s better than JEssica now) models most of the shirts on the web site, and deals with a lot of the business side of Slow Loris, a part of the job Jessica was NEVER good at.  Team Slow was now complete.
Any average workday in the studio consists of drawing, singing, printing, and beach walks with a bunch of dogs.  There’s also a pig named Marnie-biddles who likes to observe through the windows and get into things, (this makes Jessica somewhat crazy, but she still loves him).  The adopted motto ” feeling strong and not in a hurry ” reflects the pride Team Slow feels standing behind a quality hand made product .

Spokane Food Blog

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Thanks Spokane Food Blog for your piece on the inlanders best of issue. I couldn’t have said it better, but I could have said it worse.

wtf?

It hits every year, the nausea when the Inlander publishes its Best of… results. And of course the readers have done it again, exactly what was expected of them, throwing votes around like a blind zebra on crack-cocaine. No, really. They’ve outdone themselves this time, and the Best of Food section is about as disturbing as a golden-era Stephen King novel.

Of course they’re all in there: Azteca and Casa de Oro trumps De Leon for best Mexican food. Hey, if voting for Old El Paso taco shells from Safeway’s had been an option, it could have been a contender. Papa Murphy’s fought its way into the top three as best pizza. And of course, for ambiance, dessert, and — what? the? hell? — fine dining there is only one option: Clinkerdagger! I mean, seriously, what the hell? Clinkerdagger?! Of course, the McDonald’s of fine dining was almost edged out by the Burger King of sea food, Anthony’s.

What’s wrong with people?

Maybe if they stopped filling themselves with Starbucks — you know, best espresso shopand drive through espresso — they’d see the light. Starbucks?! Granted, Thomas Hammer placed #3, but #2, Rocket Bakery, wouldn’t know a good espresso drink if it hit them over the head.

Best burger? Red Robin. What? This makes me physically ill.

As we tweeted earlier, neither Sante, Latah Bistro, nor Luna were anywhere to be seen in the “Best” of… This is a crime. I mean, it literally should be. Go dine at one of those places this week. In fact, don’t stop there. Get an espresso from Coffee Social. Grab some bread from Petite Chat. Try to set yourself apart from whoever managed to get Outback-are-you-kidding-me-Steakhouse on the list.

Because this is seriously depressing. I had hoped Spokane had moved away from restaurants providing anything from dull to disgusting food.

Apparently not.

It seems opportunities just present themselves sometimes and this is one of those times. It’s exactly 3:14 Monday the 15th, and I promise you, this photo has made my day.

Peter and The Skater.

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Peter, the guy in grey, is our son Marco’s godfather. Well, actually he is a lot more than that, but lets leave it at great guy. He has a club in Seattle called Zum. Now imagine the coolest workout club you’ve ever been in. OK, this one is a lot cooler. The guy in red was hanging out there the other day evidently needing to work out a bit in order to carry all those Olympic medals around. Maybe Marco will become a speed skater.
